The Consumer Protection Bill 2019 has now been cleared by Rajya Sabha as well after crossing the Lok Sabha hurdle few days ago. This Bill apart from certain other measures, puts the onus on celebrities to avoid making tall claims when endorsing brands. It proposes a penalty of ?10 lakh for appearing in misleading ads where as Repeat offenders will be fined ?50 L with a jail term of upto 5 years.
