ABO Review : Funky!
Funky: A Quirky, Meta-Comedy That Plays It Safe!
Rating: 2.5/5
What Funky is about:
Debutant filmmaker Komal (Vishwak Sen) is directing a family entertainer called Funky. As the costs keep rising, the producer (VK Naresh) almost stalls the project. This is when his daughter, Chitra (Kayadu Lohar), steps in to take over the project, promising to make Komal complete the rest of the shoot within a limited budget. The rest of the story follows Komal’s struggle to keep his promise and save his career. Meanwhile, he falls for Chitra!
Performances:
1. Vishwak Sen: He carries the film without resorting to physical comedy beyond a point. He uses the slightly exaggerated traits of his character as the engine of the film’s humour.
2. Kayadu Lohar: As a frustrated rich woman who has to save her father`s sinking project, she is natural. Like Faria Abdullah in Jathi Ratnalu, she falls for Komal`s comical desperation.
3. Others: VK Naresh doesn`t get memorable lines. Since this is a meta-comedy, he should have gotten to do more as a senior artist who has been around for three decades. Sampath Raj, as a rowdy financier named GK, plays a Jr NTR fanboy who gets fooled. Komal`s set of direction assistants are below-average. Little Hearts fame Jaya Krishna hasn`t been used to the level he should have.
4. The cameos and bit roles: Dil Raju and Harish Shankar seem to joke about the film industry itself. Muralidhar Goud plays a doctor, while Easwari Rao plays Komal`s mother.
Technical Departments:
Bheems Ceciroleo’s soundtrack yields inconsistent results. Tracks like Dheere Dheere and a melody stand out as highlights, while Yama Yamma deserved better choreography. Suresh Sarangam’s cinematography is okay.
Sithara Entertainments doesn`t indulge in lavishness for the sake of it. Like its previous theatrical release, Anaganana Oka Raju, this one, too, has purely functional production values. In keeping with the backdrop, most scenes are set in studios and indoors.
Analysis:
By now, director Anudeep KV`s comedy style is well-known. His male protagonists know they are talentless, but can`t help themselves. Naveen Polishetty in Jathi Ratnalu knew his dumbness. Sivakarthikeyan in Prince knew he didn`t deserve the English woman he fell for; even at the school where he teaches, he was incompetent at his job. In Funky, Komal is almost a failure even before his first movie is out in theatres. As he unabashedly tells his alumni, he chose the film industry only because the school failed him in creating interest in academics.
If you like meta-comedies that don`t crack below-the-belt jokes about heroines et al, Funky is for you. It is one of the cleanest comedies to come out of Telugu cinema - no vulgarity, no cheapening of personalities. Set in the backdrop of the Telugu film industry, it tells the story of an introvert who struggles to be expressive in relationships and takes everyone around him in the film industry for a ride.
An issue with the second half is that it largely repeats the mood of the first half. The beats of the love story don`t evolve much until the last 20 minutes or so. There was enough potential to weave a chaotic comedy track around Sampath Raj`s character. Probably, some of his scenes were removed in the interest of a crisp run-time nobody asked for. The assistants in the direction department come across as extremely pointless characters; for the sake of a few more laughs and to distract from the main plot, one of them could have been given an idiosyncratic love track inspired by Nibba-Nibbi reels from the Telugu meme universe.
Verdict:
Funky is a self-aware comedy that thrives on Anudeep KV’s signature lovable loser tropes. While it avoids the vulgarity often found in the genre, the film suffers from a repetitive second half and underutilized supporting talent. It’s a breezy one-time watch but only for fans of meta-humor.
